Mark your calendars, because Friday, May 16th, 2025, is Pink Shirt Day here in Aotearoa! It’s a day where we come together to Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying! You’ll see a vibrant wave of pink across the country as schools, workplaces, and communities unite against bullying and celebrate diversity.
But Pink Shirt Day isn’t just about wearing a colour; it carries a powerful history and a particularly significant meaning for our LGBTQ+ whānau.
The Roots of Pink Shirt Day: A Stand Against Homophobia
The story of Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007. When a young student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, two older students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, took a powerful stand. They bought 50 pink shirts and distributed them to their classmates to wear in solidarity. This simple yet profound act of kindness sparked a global movement, demonstrating that even small actions can create significant change.
Why Pink Shirt Day Matters Deeply to the LGBTQ+ Community
For many in our LGBTQ+ community, the experience of bullying and discrimination is sadly all too real. Pink Shirt Day serves as a vital reminder that we are not alone and that allies across the country stand with us. It’s a day to:
- Raise Awareness: To highlight the disproportionate impact bullying can have on LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly youth.
- Promote Inclusion: To foster environments where everyone feels safe, accepted, and celebrated for who they are.
- Show Solidarity: To offer visible support to those who have experienced or are currently facing bullying.
- Encourage Open Conversation: To create space for dialogue about how we can collectively challenge prejudice and create more inclusive communities.
The courage shown by those original students in Canada resonates deeply within the LGBTQ+ community. Their act of defiance against homophobic bullying laid the foundation for a day that now champions respect, kindness, and acceptance for all.
