Seeing Ourselves: The Importance of LGBTQ+ Representation in New Zealand Media

Representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in media plays a crucial role in fostering understanding and acceptance within society. In New Zealand, where approximately 4.9% of adults identify as part of the LGBTIQ+ community, the portrayal of queer characters in local media has significant cultural implications.

The Importance of Representation

Authentic representation in media helps combat stereotypes and promotes inclusivity. Studies have shown that increased exposure to LGBTQ+ characters can lead to greater acceptance and understanding. For instance, a 2020 survey by GLAAD and P&G found that queer representation increased acceptance by up to 45%. For LGBTQ+ individuals, seeing themselves reflected in media validates their experiences and fosters a sense of belonging.

Forms of Queer Representation in Media

Queer representation can manifest in various ways, each with its own impact:

  • Negative Representation: This includes portrayals based on harmful stereotypes or depicting LGBTQ+ characters as villains, which can perpetuate misunderstandings and biases.
  • Neutral Representation: Here, characters are identified as LGBTQ+ but their sexual or gender identity isn’t central to the plot. While this normalises queer existence, it may overlook the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Positive Representation: This involves well-rounded characters whose queer identity is integral to their story, highlighting their challenges and triumphs authentically.

New Zealand’s Media Landscape

New Zealand has made strides in queer representation. The film “Rūrangi” serves as a notable example. Initially planned as a web series, it was later edited into a feature film. Remarkably, 59% of its cast and crew are non-binary, and all trans characters are portrayed by trans actors. The production consulted with an advisory panel from the trans community, ensuring authentic representation.

The Path Forward

While progress has been made, there’s room for growth. Ensuring diverse and authentic representation requires continuous effort from creators, producers, and audiences. By supporting content that portrays LGBTQ+ individuals authentically and advocating for inclusivity, we can contribute to a media landscape that truly reflects the diversity of New Zealand’s society.
