Mark Your Calendars: Essential LGBTQ+ Visibility Days for 2026

Aotearoa, we’re lucky enough to kick off the year with some of the best Pride celebrations in the world. While the global “Pride Month” officially lands in June, our local highlights happen right in the peak of the Kiwi summer—think beach vibes, festivals, and plenty of sun.

To help you keep track of what’s happening in 2026, we’ve pulled together the ultimate Rainbow calendar. Whether it’s a local street party in Ponsonby or a global day of visibility, here’s your roadmap for the year.

The Summer Peak: February & March

This is the heart of our celebration season. While the rest of the world waits for June, we’re out in the sun during Feb and March.

  • Late Jan – Mid Feb | Auckland Pride Festival: A massive month of arts, culture, and community events all across Tāmaki Makaurau.
  • 6 Feb | Waitangi Day: A significant day to reflect on our history and celebrate our Takatāpui identity within the story of Aotearoa.
  • 15 Feb | Big Gay Out (Coyle Park): One of our favorite days of the year! Grab your sunscreen and head to the park for music, stalls, and a huge community turnout.
  • 21 Feb | Auckland Rainbow Parade: When the sun dips, the lights go up. Join the crowds lining Ponsonby Road for the country’s biggest visibility event.
  • 13 Feb – 1 March | Sydney Mardi Gras: A lot of us hop across the ditch for this one—it’s like a massive trans-Tasman family reunion.
  • 31 March | Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV): A big day to celebrate and uplift our trans and gender-diverse whānau.
The Mid-Year Hub: April to August

As the weather cools down, the focus shifts toward advocacy, history, and education in our schools and workplaces.

  • 26 April | Lesbian Visibility Day: Shout out to our lesbian community!
  • 17 May | IDAHOBIT: This is a key date for NZ offices and schools—standing together against homophobia, biphobia, interphobia, and transphobia.
  • All of June | Global Pride Month: We join the international community to honor the Stonewall Riots and the global history of the movement.
  • 9 July | NZ Homosexual Law Reform Anniversary: A major local milestone. We wouldn’t be where we are today without the legends who pushed through the 1986 Act.
  • 28 August | Wear It Purple Day: A great day to show our Rainbow rangatahi (youth) that they belong and are supported exactly as they are.
Spring & Beyond: September to December

Finishing the year with more specific visibility days and important times for reflection.

  • 23 Sept | Bisexual Visibility Day: Part of Bi-Awareness Week—celebrating the “B” in our acronym and the unique experiences of the bi+ community.
  • 8 Oct | International Lesbian Day: This one is a point of pride for us—many trace its origins right back to a march in New Zealand in 1980.
  • 21 Oct | International Pronouns Day: A simple, meaningful way to make our everyday spaces more inclusive for everyone.
  • 20 Nov | Transgender Day of Remembrance: A solemn day where we come together to hounor those lost to anti-trans violence.
  • 1 Dec | World AIDS Day: A time to remember, support, and keep pushing for an HIV-free future in Aotearoa through the work of the Burnett Foundation.
Why these dates matter

From the sunset on Ponsonby Road to the more quiet days of remembrance, these dates keep us connected. They remind us of how far we’ve come in Aotearoa and how much more we can achieve together.
